A Fairytale Wedding Venue in South Wales

Set within private parkland in the Vale of Glamorgan, Hensol Castle is one of South Wales’ most iconic wedding venues. With its striking Gothic architecture, turrets and lakeside setting, it delivers that unmistakable fairytale feel from the moment guests arrive.

Inside, the castle blends historic character with contemporary comfort. Licensed ceremony rooms cater for both intimate gatherings and larger celebrations, with capacity for around 150 guests during the day and up to 200 in the evening. The elegant interiors, high ceilings and period features provide a timeless backdrop for ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and evening receptions, all under one roof.

About Hensol Castle

One of Hensol Castle’s standout features is its beautiful lake and surrounding grounds. Just steps from the main entrance, couples have access to sweeping lawns and waterside views, ideal for drinks receptions and relaxed portraits. With on-site accommodation available and weddings typically offered on an exclusive-use basis, couples can enjoy a seamless, private celebration from morning preparations through to the final dance.

Why I Love Hensol Castle Wedding Photography

Hensol Castle is one of those venues that instantly elevates a wedding gallery. The architecture alone — with its turrets, stone façade and dramatic entrance — gives every couple that timeless, almost cinematic feel. From a photographic perspective, it offers scale and elegance without overcomplicating anything. The setting does a lot of the heavy lifting.

What I particularly love is the variety it gives me throughout the day. In the morning, there’s beautiful window light inside the castle for relaxed preparation shots. After the ceremony, we can step straight out onto the lawns or down towards the lake for natural, romantic portraits. The reflections on the water at golden hour are something special — especially in summer and early autumn when the light softens perfectly across the grounds.

It’s also a venue that works in all weather. If the Welsh skies turn moody, the castle’s dramatic exterior actually benefits from it, adding depth and atmosphere. And inside, the elegant ceremony spaces and historic features mean we’re never short of character-filled backdrops.

For me, Hensol Castle combines grandeur with practicality — everything flows smoothly, there’s space to breathe, and there’s always another beautiful corner to use. That flexibility makes storytelling effortless and allows couples to relax, which is when the best photographs happen.

Where to start? Phil was an absolute dream to have photographing our wedding. Nothing was too much of an ask for him, and he honestly went above and beyond for us! Phil did not only take amazing photographs of our day, but he also rounded up guests when needed, gave staff at our venue a nudge when required and assisted us and guests alike with numerous things from finding the bar to doing up the buttons on my wedding dress in the morning! Not only was Phil lovely to get on with, but he left a lasting impression on all of our guests saying who have repeatedly mentioned to us how wonderful he was to have around. We can’t begin to thank you enough Phil, and we are so impressed with the sneak peak pictures we have had already. If you are thinking about booking Phil for your wedding, think no further. Book him now, you won’t regret it! Thanks so much, Mr & Mrs Pullen xx

Best Time of Year for Wedding Photography

Hensol Castle is one of those venues that looks impressive year-round, but each season gives your wedding photos a slightly different feel.

Spring (April–June) is a beautiful time for softer, romantic photography. The grounds begin to bloom, the lawns are vibrant green, and the lighter evenings allow for relaxed portraits around the lake without harsh midday sun.

Summer (July–September) is ideal if you want to make the most of the outdoor space. The long days mean plenty of time for lakeside portraits, confetti on the lawn, and golden-hour shots with warm light reflecting off the water.

Autumn (October–November) brings rich tones to the trees surrounding the lake, adding depth and warmth to images. The castle’s dramatic architecture pairs perfectly with moodier skies and candlelit interiors.

Winter (December–March) creates a more intimate atmosphere. The historic interiors come into their own, and if you’re lucky enough to get frost or mist around the lake, it adds a cinematic, almost fairytale feel.

If I had to pick a sweet spot, late spring and early autumn often offer the best balance of comfortable weather and flattering light — but Hensol Castle’s architecture ensures it looks striking in any season.
